Summary on Grant Application Form
This project aims to develop a prototype interactive web environment to support collaborative learning, in groups over the Internet. The design specification is informed by general social psychology theory of groups plus recent social psychological theorising specific to group process in the computer medium. It will be tailored to meet user requirements in the field of higher education for collaborative peer-learning among students who are geographically dispersed.A prototype software system will be built using HTML, dynamic HTML and JAVA to create linked interactive web pages that can be accessed over the internet using standard web browsers. This system will be supplemented by helper applications that provide video conferencing and application sharing. A Unique feature of the system is that it will be theoretical driven to support aspects of social group process over the life cycle of the interacting group that are essential for effective collaboration. The prototype system will be developed though an interative process of design and evaluation. Evaluations will consist of laboratory studies of small interacting groups, plus major field trials of student groups, based in England and the Netherlands, collaborating over the Internet to produce assessed work for their degree courses.
