We seek funding for an ambitious and diverse programme centred around a highly modified Philips CM20 TEM optimised for the study of magnetic materials. We intend to take advantage of its proven performance and to enhance it further in studies of a wide range of advanced magnetic materials, the largest group being of interest for sensor application. Specifically we intend to carry our studies of magnetisation processes in various films, multilayers and lithographically-defined elements over a wide range of temperature, filed and time. One aspect of the new programme is development of a stage to allow local laser-beam heating. The systems to be studied include: exchange-biased single layer films, spin-valves and spin tunnel junctions, antiferromagnetically and bi-quadratically coupled multilayers, CMR films and patterned polycrystalline and epitaxial films. Emphasis will be given to the extraction of quantitative nonmagnetic information. Most of the materials to be studied will come from academic and industrial collaborators and there will be strong interaction with the UK magnetics community throughout. This was a condition for our original funding and we aim to continue to act as a national focus for experimental studies of magnetic and physical nonstructures and the way in which they relate.
