Summary on Grant Application Form |
The recent trend in research in helical scan (e.g. video) recording of consumer use is towards high-frequency digital television signals. Such recording requires much higher frequencies to be stored as binary information with reduced bit length on high-coercivity magnetic recording tape. Magnetic heads for digital video will require high field gradients for writing and extended frequency response for reading the digital information. This project will both theoretically and experimentally evaluate new thin-film materials to be coated on the inside of the recording gap of the video heads so as to create non-symmetric field functions ( such field profiles determine writing field gradients and head frequency response). The research will model field functions using Vector Fields Ltd, TOSCA and ELEKTRA finite element software to establish the head playback function and so predict optimum frequency response using a numerical and/or analytical evaluation of the Reciprocity Integral. Writing field gradients will be modelled and conditions for optimum writing performance will be found. Gap film ,material used in the experiments will be combination of magnetic films and non-magnetic but highly conducting films for eddy-current induced filed modification at high frequency.
