Summary on Grant Application Form |
The research will involve the sputter-deposition of coupon samples and a characterisation of their microstructure and magnetic properties. A second deposition technique, that on ion-assisted ion beam sputtering, will also be used as part of our attempts to control microstructure by changing nucleation and growth in model samples. Samples will be prepared in clean systems under conditions thought to be essential for the fabrication of advanced media. Microstructural characterisation will involve the very effective techniques of high resolution electron microscopy and electron diffraction, supported by AFM/MFM and x-ray diffraction. Properties of interest will be crystalline texture, grain segregation of clustering and grain size distributions. Magnetic measurements will determine the conventional hysteresis properties and, in particular, explore processes and parameters related to recording behaviour, such as magnetisation reversal and thermal stability. Measurements of magnetic anisotropy will also be attempted.
