Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed project utilises a new, previously unknown, form of opto-mechanical interaction as the basis of novel smart optically-actuated devices. The mechanical movement of such devices (micro- and nano-actuators, diaphragm micropumps, nanomanipulators) is stimulated solely by illumination with polarised light. The aim of the project is two-fold: a) experimental exploration of the fundamental limits and technological potential of this new phenomenon; b) development of an optical-actuator device, forming the basis of an assembler - multiaxis manipulator able to grip, move and release structures on atomic-length scales.
