Summary on Grant Application Form |
A step scan FTIR spectrometer will be used to study the time resolved emission from the reactions of free radicals such as CH3, CH4, NH2, CF2 and halagonated methyl species, mainly with O2 and OH. The radicals will be formed by a pulsed laser photolysis in the uv (using excimer lasers of YAG laser harmonics) or IR (by multiple photon dissociation with a CO2 laser). Emission will be observed time resolved at a resolution of >100 ns (determined by the time resolution of the IR detector) and between 800 and 5000 cm. Improved resolution (to less than 1 cm) will enable clear identification of reaction products, and allow internal energy distribution to be measured. Time resolution will give rates of product formation and vibrational relaxation, from which rate constants can be obtained. Measurements will be carried out at elevated temperatures, and ground state observations will be made by time resolved FTIR absorption. In some cases, quantitative estimates of quantum yields into specific reaction channels will be made, making use of several comparative techniques already shown to be valid for IR emission studies. The reactions are chosen to be of interest in combustion and aeronomy.
