Summary on Grant Application Form
The Visiting Fellow will set up the synthesis of core-shell nanocrystals with cadmium selenide cores and cadmium sulphide shells. The nanocrystals will be formed into thin films by spin-coating, either using simple nanocrystal solutions, or by mixing them with a polymer. The optical properties, particularly the luminescence efficiencies, of these films will then be studied. The final aim is to feed core-shell nanocrystals into the programme of electrical characterisation already underway for simple nanocrystals under EPSRC grant GR/L57081. This programme involves measurements of electrical transport in films of nanocrystals, and measurements of charge transfer at the interface between nanocrystals and conjugated polymers. The availability of core-shell nanocrystals will add value to this programme by allowing the study of the effects of a well-controlled surface barrier on the electron transfer process.
