Summary on Grant Application Form |
The most promising route to attain the above long-term objectives is through the coupling of the stored e.m. energy of the generator into the directed kinetic energy of an imploding wire array, followed by the rapid transfer of energy and current to a central cryogenic fibre of hydrogen of deuterium. This approach was included in the November 1995 grant submission for a 4 year programme but strengthened by recent results from Sandia National Laboratory. We will diagnose and model the initial behaviour of each wire, the merger of the expanding plasmas into a shell, the early arrival of precursor plasma on the axis, the development of Rayleigh-Taylor instability, the converting of ion kinetic energy to thermal, and the transfer of current and energy to the central fibre.Techniques, particularly spectroscopic and X-radiographic will be further developed for diagnosing the dense plasma core. A programme of coda development will include the addition of radiation transport, multiple ion species, fluid mixing models and equation of state models to the 2-D resistive MHD code along with the development of a 3-D resistive MHD.
