Summary on Grant Application Form |
Unexpectedly high concentrations of NO2 have been observed from rehead systems as well as stack emissions from CHP and CCGT plants (supplementary firing processes). The conversion of NO to NO2 in such systems continues to be a problem for power generating and aerospace industries. This application proposes fundamental studies of NO-NO2 conversion process using strained N2/02/CO2/CO/NO/CH4 - methane turbulent diffusion flames. Non-intrusive Raman-Rayleigh scattering and PLIF will be used to measure stable and non-stable species such as N2, 02, CH4, 0H, CH and NO. In addition conventional techniques will be used to measure the concentration species such as NO, NO2, CO, 02, CH4 and temperature field. The effects of oxidant temperature, strain rate, and presence of CH4 or other oxidizable species on NO-NO2 conversion process will be investigated. Using a detailed reaction mechanism of hydrocarbon oxidation, a flamelet library will be assembled and integrated with an elliptic CFD code. First, validation with in-flame measurements will be performed with the simple test problem of a methane turbulent-jet flame oxidizing in an oxygen depleted gas turbine combustion produce. Secondly, using the experimental data obtained from supplementary fire test rig facilities will allow predictive capabilities of the modified CFD code to be evaluated.
