Summary on Grant Application Form |
This proposal is concerned with the systematic examination of metallic mercury adsorption on solid sorbents in order to derive kinetic constants for the sorbent-sorbate interactions, necessary for the derivation of a mathematical model tool for the prediction of mercury removal from combustion/incineration processes. The development of such a model has been hampered by a dearth of kinetic data. The emphasis of this proposal, therefore, is to address this lack of information by determining such data for the adsorption of mercury in its various forms on to inexpensive adsorbents. This will be achieved using a classical fixed bed reactor under flue gas and temperature conditions representative of waste and coal-fired combustors. These data will be used in the development of a new Hg-adsorbents sub-model. This model will be subsequently validated against data obtained in a large-scale laboratory coal/waste fired furnace where solid adsorbents will be injected for Hg removal. Finally, the Hg removal efficiency of selected adsorbents will be predicted for a full-scale industrial combustor.
