Summary on Grant Application Form |
Reliable quantitative predictions of local temperature are critical both to emissions computation in the gas phase and, through the heat transfered to the combustor liner, to the assessment of its mechanical integrity. Whilst increasingly detailed models of the sooting and radiation heat transfer processes are now being incorporated in CFD codes for purposed of combustor design analysis, progress is presently restricted by the paucity of data on joint properties of the gas phase, notably soot concentration, and wall heat fluxes and temperatures at suitably representative gas turbine operating conditions. The proposed study will make accessible to the research community the first data, at practically relevant conditions, necessary for such model development and evaluation. Restricted optical access and high pressure, sooting envinroments limit options for diagnostic measurement and therefore the study will seek to exploit the combination of probing and line-of-sight techniques for soot and radiation measurement demonstrated successfully at Cranfield under similar, but less arduous conditions. Detailed comparisons between computational prediction and experimental measurement will advise both activites on the conditions to be explored and the key properties to be captured.
