Summary on Grant Application Form |
The efficient use of energy and the formation of pollutants are directly related to the detailed chemical structures of flames. Advances in the understanding of high temperature chemistry and the ability to model one-dimensional steady state flames have transformed our understanding of flame structures. Studies of this type now span practical fuels from methane to n-decane. However, many phenomena associated with laminar flames involve transient and/or multi-dimensional effects to the point were the steady state one-dimensional flame is indeed the exception rather than the norm. However, very few studies of either transient or steady multi-dimensional flames have been performed. This is partly due to the significant demands on computational resources - similar to those encountered in DNS of turbulent flows. The objective of the proposed work is to extend past work on steady state and transient flames to elliptic multi-dimensional formulations through a combination of existing efficient solution techniques. The program formulated is partly fundamental in nature but addresses practical issues such as pollutant formation in multi-dimensional flame structures through a direct collaboration with BG plc.
