In many situations the interaction f thermal radiation with emitting, absorbing and scattering media must be accounted for. There are well established methods available for the calculation of radiative heat transfer in emitting/absorbing media. Among them the discrete ordinates method, discrete transfer method, zonal method and Monte Carlo method are frequently used. These methods have been successfully used with CFD procedures to predict flow, combustion and heat transfer in engineering systems involving cylindrical and rectangular geometries. Most practical engineering situations involve complex geometries. Therefore based on body-flitted co-ordinate systems CFD procedures have been developed to calculate flow in complex geometrical configurations. The discrete ordinates method has not been generalised to the extent of dealing with complex geometry combustion systems. This proposal intends to develop the discrete ordinates method for non-orthogonal mesh systems. The proposed development will also consider modelling of media involving scattering. Accuracy of the proposed work will be assessed against bench mark results and other available data. The work will provide a non-ray based method capable of handling scattering that could be used in general combustion modelling procedures.
