Summary on Grant Application Form |
The programme will make use of the capability for Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) now established at Cambridge University to support the development of sub-grid scale models for Large Eddy Simulation (LES) of turbulent premixed combustion. The LES approach is able to capture a much greater level of detail than conventional Reynolds-averaged methods, especially in unsteady reacting flows. LES sub-grid scale modelling for combustion is not well developed at present and the aim of the programme is to provide essential statistical data from DNS to assist progress in this important area. High-order and wavelet-based DNS codes are available and realistic problem sizes can be tackled using National computing facilities. DNS will be carried out in three dimensions with simple (one-step) chemistry and also with reduced (four-step) reaction mechanisms. Three key existing model approaches have been identified and data will be generated in order to validate and evaluate each of these. The datasets produced will also be of value in developing novel approaches to the problem.
