Summary on Grant Application Form
The projects will develop and evaluate a vehicle roll monitoring system. The demonstration of a working systems will provide the springboard for development of a production system.Initial work will examine rollover accidents and determine the characteristics of these incidents, using TRL's comprehensive accident database. Simple physical models will be used to determine the conditions of roll and the likelihood of roll given different conditions. TRL's considerable experience of HGV suspension dynamics will be used to support this task.Corrintech will develop with RWL the sensors for this project which will be used to measure dynamic wheel loads. RWL will be responsible for the development of appropriate software and hardware to provide the monitoring device. Central weighing will act as the ultimate marketing company.RWL and TRL will evaluate the sensors, initially using rig tests, to determine their correct operation. Subsequently a vehicle will be fitted with the system and tested at TRL.. this will be the demonstration vehicle. Having successfully developed the prototype, a fleet trial will be undertaken to monitor the roll conditions in service. RWL/central Weighing will perform this task with TRL who will be responsible for the analysis. At present the only EC member state imposing a roll test for HGVs is Denmark. A simple static tilt test is used for tanker vehicles. The EC requires that buses and coaches undergo a simple test Discussions are on-going within the EC but it unlikely that there will be significant progress in terms of legislation until scientific evidence is available. In view of these discussions, the timing of this project is particularly appropriate. The project has the potential of reducing the number and severity of road traffic accidents involving vehicle rollover. It is also likely that vehicles could be made safer.
