The proposed research programme will investigate the design, implementation, and use of problem-solving environments into computational science, engineering and mathematics. A problem-solving environment (PSE) provides a complete integrated computing environment for composing, compiling and running applications in a specific problem area. The research will be based on distributed object technology, and will involve, where appropriate, the use of third-party software for building PSEs, as well as the design of new software components, to create a highly portable and extensible software architecture for PSEs. Features to be incorporated into the design include a high degree of intelligence in assisting users in formulating problems, selecting solution methods and algorithms, and choosing resources upon which to execute a distributed simulation. Other features to be investigated include (1) graphical tools for programme composition, (2) computational steering and visualisation, (3) the use of sophisticated job control systems and (4) access to virtual libraries and other distributed knowledge repositories. The applicability of these concepts will be demonstrated by the construction of prototype PSEs for performing classical molecular dynamics simulations and finite element computations.
