Research will be carried out into some large-scale software development processes of an industrial collaborator. The research will be delivered in the form of a modelling tool, which allows software manufacturers to capture models of the development process, which they currently operate. The model will be used to plan improvements to that process and to predict and control the effectiveness of these improvements as required by the highest levels of capability maturity.Initially, we will formalise some of the development processes of the industrial collaborator. We have already captured some processes informally in earlier projects and in ongoing collaboration. We will use a System's Dynamics simulation tool for the initial formalisation and for some early calibration. Calibration will be achieved by consultation with the collaborator's process improvement team. However, system's dynamics required models, which are extremely detailed. Consequently, an easier-to-use, but still simulation-based, modelling tool will be built. This tool will use the POSD and RolEnact notations which we have developed for describing complex systems. The calibrated models will be transferred to the new tool, recalibrated and supplied to our collaborators for in-service validation. The prototype tool will be made widely available to other organisations.
