Summary on Grant Application Form |
This is an exploratory study of the optical response primarily of two similar but distinct structure types. Firstly we wish to fabricate and then explore the optical response of a regular array of metal micro-discs. These have localised plasmon and surface plasmon modes, which may couple together to give resonantly enhanced responses. For small enough metal islands they may be treated almost as 'giant molecules' all with a set of eigenfrequencies given by their size, shape and dielectric response function. These, in a regular array may then give elaborate two-dimensional optical band structures, the symmetry of the array also playing a significant role.Secondly we wish also to explore the obverse, arrays of small holes in thin metal films. Such holes have edge resonances, as well as providing strong perturbation of the surface plasmons on the thin metal film surfaces. Again varying hole diameter, hole shape, hope spacing, metal thickness and dielectric symmetry will allow control over the surface plasmon band structure and hence the optical response of such systems. In addition we would like to begin exploration of multilayers of such structures.
