Summary on Grant Application Form |
As Broadcasters seek to fulfil the ITC requirements for increased subtitling, attention is being focused on providing new tools within the subtitle service provider's repertoire to enable new types of programme to be subtitled in adequate yet cost-effective way. The purpose of this proposed work is to investigate how speech recognition and speaker recognition could be used to increase the efficiency of subtitling and to enable subtitles to be produced for a wider range of programme material, particularly live programmes. This work will build on systems and techniques already developed by Synapsys Ltd. In conjunction with ITFC, but we will also draw on academic input from experts in the fields of speech and speaker recognition, natural language processing and human- computer interface and dialogue design. It will also assess the latest speech recognition technology as it is currently exists to the task of subtitling live and pre-recorded television programmes by enhancing the exsisting tools and by training operators to create subtitles by speech.
