Summary on Grant Application Form |
It is proposed to fabricate and characterise potential 3D photonic band gap (PBG) materials based upon synthetic opal substrates. Already possessing selective diffraction properties, these materials could, with modification, find applications as highly efficient tunable laser gain media/electroluminescent displays. Opal hosts will be modified in two ways. Firstly III-V materials will be deposited in the voids between the silica spheres that comprise the opal structure by MOCVD methods. PBG properties will be tuned via choice of sphere diameter and the extent/quality of the III-V infill. Possible routes to the selective doping (n and p type) of the infill will be examined so as to evaluate the feasibility of producing light generation within the PBG structure. Secondly, since the feasibility of this latter aspect is as yet unclear, opals will be modified by the CVD growth of conducting Sn02 followed by impregnation with known (electro-) luminescent dyes. Resulting materials should produce PBG-modified luminescence which will provide insight into the possible characteristics expected from the III-V systems and also indicate the potential of the opal/dye systems as PBG materials in their own right.
