Summary on Grant Application Form |
Unwired electrodes have been used industrially for electrochemical production and electrosynthesis for many years. It is proposed that this simple concept can be transposed to micromachined analytical devices and used to develop a generic detection method for capillary electrophoresis based on electrochemiluminescence (ECL). Reliable and sensitive ECL detection at single and multiple unwired electrodes will be demonstrated. The spatial control of ECL will be exploited using a CCD camera to acquire positional information for ultrasensitive detection. The development of miniature unwired electrodes is particularly timely in the context of the current trend towards miniaturisation of analytical devices because the fabrication of unwired electrodes fits smoothly into existing manufacturing techniques used in the microelectronics and optoelectronics industries. Therefore, they are readily incorporated into miniature analytical devices that integrate fluid handling and detection on a single chip.
