The highly successful world-wide activity in HTS device research has only been possible because of the exceptional development of thin film growth technology, and this has also permitted rapid developments in many other areas. However, epitaxial oxide film growth is far from having reached a static position of reliable excellence; there have been recent dramatic advances in techniques and understanding in the areas of heterostructure growth, vicinal films and buffer layers on metallic substrates which are likely to permit future developments of improved materials and devices. The aim of this proposal is to advance our world class thin film growth facility to enable the production of the highest quality films and heterostructures through the use of in situ monitoring and process control, enhancement of step flow growth, improvements in growth on non-optimal substrates, and the development of in situ deposition of Hg-based superconductors. This programme will provide the innovation essential for growth service support for the research community whilst maintaining the investment in the deposition capability of the IRC.
