Explosive bonding is a process to produce bi-metallic plates. Whilst well established, it is still essentially an empirical process. This project is divided into 5 interconnected phases whose final objective is to enable manufacturers to optimise their procedures and produce an enhanced bond strength for different metal combinations.The first phase (1) is devoted to creating and adapting numerical techniques to study a simplified case of impact welding. In the second phase (2) UMIST will monitor the industrial process (operational parameters) and generate experimental data samples. The third phase (3) will refine the numerical models developed in (1) for the more complex case of the industrial process and compare with experimental data generated in (2). A relation between operational parameters and physical parameters will e theoretically and numerically developed in Phase 4, the University of Reading will develop methods to evaluate the bond strength of samples generated in (2). Finally, UMIST will relate the mechanical properties of the bond with the physical and operational parameters.
