Response surface methods involve the empirical modelling of relationships between process inputs and process outputs. The methods are widely used in industry and in laboratory based experiments to aid the understanding, optimisation and control of processes. Because the modelling is empirical, i.e. based on data collected rather than physical theory, the specific form of the model is not known in advance, so it is important that experiments are designed to allow a range of models to be fitted efficiently. This project will develop general methods to produce designs using these properties. The Principal Investigator will devote most of his time to this project while spending six months as a Visiting Fellow in the Department of Statistics, University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA, where world leaders in the area of response surface methodology are based. Some preliminary work has already been carried out, which involved the development of a class of model-robust designs, and is currently being written up. This work is useful for up to five factors and the proposed project will generalise this to any number of factors, either qualitative or quantitative.
