Summary on Grant Application Form
A series of test welds will be carried out using multi arc processes to weld (a) austenitic stainless steel 316LN grade (b) duplex stainless steel and (c), (a) or (b) with carbon steel, and all at 15mm plate thickness. The cooling rate of the weld metal will be measured in one specific position by inserting thermocouples into the solidifying metal. The welds will be assessed by non-destructive testing and mechanical testing. Each weld will then be examined by optical and transmission electron microscopy, and in particular the microstructure and precipitation of intermetallic phases will be characterised. A relationship between cooling rate and precipitation will be established. Based on the finding, recommendations will be made to optimise the process parameters. Variables to be examined will include the composition of the consumables, the use of wires of different compositions in the same weld and the plate preparation angle, including asymmetric preparations to control the relative dilution when dissimilar parent plate compositions are studied.
