Summary on Grant Application Form |
This project is concerned with the design and manufacture of multi-axis gyroscopes using the new SOI wafer and DRIE process. The work will involve a collaboration between DERA (DRIE process) and BCO (SOI wafers). The research will begin with the evaluation of suitable design forms and the modelling of their dynamics to predict mechanical performance. Capacitive, electromagnetic and piezoelectric methods of exciting and measuring the structural vibration of the gyroscope will be assessed. For each case the 'electrical feed through' from the drive to the pick-offs will be determined and arrangements will be sought which will minimise this problem. For the best design, process plans and fabrication rules will be evaluated and prototype devices will be manufactured. The mechanical characteristics of the prototype will be measured using laser vibrometry and the measurements used to assess quality of the fabricated device by determining the mistuning and cross-coupling between the drive and the sense modes. Correction of these mechanical errors will be investigated using trimming procedures based upon repeated measurement and laser and FIB ablation. The work will be concluded by assessing the performance of the manufactured device as a multi-axis rate of turn sensor.
