Summary on Grant Application Form |
Spalling has often been seen in concrete when subjected to a fire, and has been demonstrated to have significant influence on the fire resistance. However, the exact mechanism regarding to why, when, and under what conditions the spalling will occur, and its quantitative influence on the fire resistance of concrete structures, are not clear. The proposed research aims to identify the mechanisms of concrete spalling and the factors causing the spalling, and to predict the effects of the spalling on the fire resistance of concrete structures. We wish to simulate the whole process of the progressive spalling in order to identify how `real concrete' fails in a fire. The overall objective is to provide an improved understanding of concrete failure during a fire and the quantitative influence of the spalling on the fire resistance of concrete structures which can be incorporated into the fire safety design codes.
