Summary on Grant Application Form
We propose to prepare a series of homochiral magnesium compounds for use as asymmetric induction reagents. All of the reactions to be studied involve the tranfser of asymmetry from a homochiral organometallic onto a prochiral substrate ie heteromolecular asymmetric induction. A central pillar of this proposal is utilising the divalent nature of magnesium, to design reagents which formally bond simultaneously to both a spectator chiral directing group and a reactive anion. Since the chiral anion is formally bonded to the metal centre it will exert a strong directional influence during any reaction. This approach overcomes common problems encountered in many asymmetric strategies, such as a chiral solvent competition with chiral Lewis base ligands or the need for coaggregation with a chiral Lewis acid additive (eg lithium amides). In additional, these reagents combine a variety of properties which makes them outstanding candidates for such reactions. More specifically, these compounds are easily prepared, readily purified, are highly reactive and will be designed to have simple, reproducible solution chemistry. Overall, we strongly believe that homochiral magnesium compounds offer a new and exciting range of organometallic reagents for use in a wide variety of asymmetric transformations.
