Summary on Grant Application Form
Reliable robust gas sensing systems are required for industrial and environmental monitoring. The systems that are currently available do not fully meet the requirements of industry and regulators. In the project novel infrared detectors with superior sensitivity will be used in an array to monitor gases that evolve from landfill sites. Small arrays of intersubband detectors operating in the 2-4 micrometers region at normal incidence will be developed in the Department of Electronic Engineering. Both novel infrared arrays and near infrared arrays (that will be available as soon as the project starts) will be used in a multi-band pass gas cell to monitor the gases of interest (i.e. Carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, ammonia and total hydrocarbons). Gas standards will be passed through the gas cell and then analysed by gas chromatography to provide reference data that can be used to calibrate the response of the array elements. Chemometric techniques such as Project to Latent Structure and Variable Selection Multiple Linear regression will be used to construct robust calibration models to allow for multicomponent, simultaneous, quantitative determination of the chemical species under investigation.
