We propose research into a new type of remote sensor for sub ppb metal ion assay in solution. The optical sensor is based on selective fluorescence lifetime quenching due to Forster dipole-dipole resonance energy transfer from a flurophore to a metal ion - chelate complex encapsulated in a porous sol-gel of polymer matrix which extracts and pre-concentrates the metal ions from solution. As a means towards achieving this aim in a miniaturised sensor we will also research into electronic drive circuitry which will make superluminescent light emitting diodes (LEDs) suitable for fluorescence lifetime sensing by achieving subanosecond time resolution at high repetition rates. The importance of optical technology and sensors has been recognised in Foresight and the new type of sensor directly addresses the Analytical Science Programme themes of ultratrace analysis and miniaturisation. Once proven the sensor could open up a new approach to metal ion sensing in industrial control, environmental monitoring and clinical medicine.
