Summary on Grant Application Form
The use of both process and consumer scrap in the manufacture of aluminium alloys greatly enhances the cost-competitiveness of semi-fabricated products such as sheet for architectural and automotive applications. However, scrap introduces additional alloying elements that can have a detrimental effect on alloy properties, Particularly corrosion resistance. In collaboration with Alcan international, it is proposed to investigate how the poor corrosion resistance of alloys containing a high scrap content can be overcome by suitable surface processing. Specifically, it should be possible to dissolve out the undesirable microstructural components of the alloy surface. This requires a fundamental understanding of the mechanisms of corrosion of these alloys, as well as the electrochemistry of surface processing. New surface-processing strategies will be tested on Alcan's Pilot Plant. A particular focus will be the use of environmentally-acceptable chemicals. The insight gained from this project will be of future economic significance as more emphasis is place on recycling the ever-increasing wroght aluminium content of cars.
