Summary on Grant Application Form |
The requested computer equipment and software will be employed in conjunction with the Sheffield FEGTEM facility. It will enable users of the facility to efficiently analyse their data, in a manner which was suggested as desirable by the original FEGTEM Grant Panel. We request the purchase of three computers, a Silicon Graphics unit, a PowerMac and an IBM PC: these will have distinctly different areas of application, as described in the proposal. We also request the purchase of appropriate associated software and consumables to cover three years of use. The new computer facility will allow users to carry out vital simulations of high resolution electron images to characterise their structural content for correlation with analytical data from the same sample areas. Users will also be able to enhance images by post-processing them using all conventional techniques. The computer resources requested will significantly enhance the efficiency of use of the FEGTEM facility.
