Summary on Grant Application Form
The project aims to investigate some consequences of links from the Calculus of variations and Symplectic Geometry to Hamiltonian Dynamics. For example, it was proved by Weierstrass that every orbit on an invariant torus of a certain type minimises the action. These tori are essential for confinement of particles in nuclear fusion reactors and other contexts. The project will use this variational property as a criterion for confinement, and develop a number of other related topics.
