Summary on Grant Application Form
VOMs have been found to occur in landfills and in fermentation processes of sewage sludge. Although some sources of VOMs in the environment have been identified, their impact on humans are still unknown. Therefore this proposal will focus on the development and evaluation of an improved analytical method to determine VOMs at ultra-trace level in a matrix of dozens of volatile organic compounds. An on-line coupling from gas chromatography to inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (GC-ICP-MS) will be developed and optimised for cryogenically trapped volatile metal (loid) compounds in air. Standard atmospheres containing volatile metal (loid) compounds will be generated and used for the evaluation of the analytical method. The sampling methods will be tested for sampling efficiency and redistribution reactions of the concentrated VOMs. The analytical method will be applied to the determination of volatile metal (loid) compounds in air from a variety of different sites (e.g., landfills, sewage plants, peat dogs), where people might be exposed to those biogenically generated compounds.
