Summary on Grant Application Form
The key C-C bond-forming step in alkene hydroformylation involves the migration of an alkyl group from the metal to co-ordinated CO, thus forming a metal-acyl. Although some minor analogous changes have been carried out (e.g. in silylformylation) no work has been carried out in which the alkyl acceptor is varied from CO. We present a case that readily accessible metal nitrides have the potential to act as CO equivalents in catalytic reactions, and that the overall result would be a controlled introduction of a functional nitrogen atom into the alkene of other organic reactant. The experimental approach would build on our experience in homogeneous catalysts, identifying candidate nitrides nitrides and gaining information on their reactivity towards potential catalysts with emphasis on rhodium, but also in Ru, Pd and Pt chemistry. That phase would be followed by efforts to translate the observations into viable catalytic chemistry, using simple alkenes (vinylarenes, cycloalkenes) and hydrogen as the reductant. In this the nitrene would function stoichiometrically, but further efforts would be directed to determining whether a reaction catalytic in nitride could be achieved so that an accessible nitrogen source could be coupled to a regenerable nitride.
