Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of the project is to develop magnetic field sensor elements based on giant magnetoresistive (GMR) thin films for the next generation of current sensors required to meet the needs of the electronic motor control industry. Motor control systems utilise large numbers of current sensors with a response from DC to several hundreds kHz, but newer, more sophisticated, control systems are placing increasing demands on the specification of the sensor device in terms of performance, physical size an cost. The present industry standard Hall effect devices have reached practical limits in meeting these requirements. In this project we propose to design, prototype and implement novel compensated bridge structure GMR devices incorporating integrated soft adjacent layer (SAL) structure for mass market current sensing and full 360 rotation sensing. In addition to offering the first low cost widespread application of GMR technology, the project will introduce novel packaging and sensor geometries of importance for facilitating the trend to increasing sophistication in motor control electronics.
