Summary on Grant Application Form |
Atomic-scale quantum wires will be investigated theoretically by a combination of two different approaches. On the one hand, theoretical models will be constructed and solved to obtain the wires' behaviour as a function of size, coupling to a substrate, electron-phonon and electron-electron interactions. These models will be used to investigate the modification to the ideal one-dimensional behaviour of the wires resulting from disorder and coupling to the environment. In parallel, first principle electronic structure calculations will be performed for particular systems in order to provide parameters for the model calculations, to validate those models for particular cases, and to make close contact with experimentally realised systems. The systems studied will include atomic-scale wires fabricated at surfaces from semiconducting and metallic materials from conjugated organic molecules.
