Summary on Grant Application Form |
Railway tunnels to the surface are often constructed using cut and cover techniques. The cover of older tunnels is often supported by girders with masonry jack arches between. The structural system can be subjected to aggressive environments. Remedial works are complicated by enclosed working spaces and short access periods.Carbon fibre composites are a good solution to the remediation of the cover structure. They have high strength and stiffness and are lightweight. They are bonded directly to steel and cast iron to strengthen vulnerable areas and to improve the ductility of cast iron. Carbon fibre composite girders inserted beneath the jack arch and between the original girders can be used to create alternative load paths in the event of a girder failure. These composites are widely used in aerospaces and shipbuilding but their use in construction is limited, partly because of (unfounded) concerns about their long-term performance. The project will determine the initial strength and stiffness of steel and cast iron girders strengthened in tension and shear and will then investigate the long term performance using aging techniques. An important aspect will be the dissemination of results to industry by means of a Design Guide and Seminars.
