Summary on Grant Application Form |
Pre-swirl are used to supply the cooling air to the blades in gas turbines. In the direct-transfer system, the air is supplied at a large radius, through stationary pre-swirl nozzles, and flows directly into the blade-cooling holes in the rotating turbine disc. In the cover-plate system, the pre-swirl air is supplied at a small radius and flows radially outward in the space between the disc and a cover-plate attached to it. In the proposed research, both stationary and rotating cover-plate rigs will be used to determine the effect of geometry on the pressure drop between the pre-swirl nozzles and the blade cooling holes. By reducing the pressure drop, the pre-swirl ration can be increased with a consequent reduction in the temperature of the blade-cooling air. Transient heat transfer tests will be conducted in the rotating-disc rig for both direct-transfer and cooling plate systems. In particular, thermochromic liquid crystals and thin-film platinum resistance thermometers will be used to measure the temperature distribution and the local Nusselt numbers in the critical area around the blade-cooling holes. The experimental data will then be used to validate CFD codes and to improve the design procedures for pre-swirl cooling systems.
