Summary on Grant Application Form
CVD diamond films are now being produced by a wide variety of different processes for a range of different applications. These films are known to contain a number of impurities of particular importance are oxygen, nitrogen and boron. They are introduced into the growth process in order to achieve certain well-established advantages such as increased rate of growth or improved physical properties of the films produced. However, little is known about the spatial distribution of the impurities, the defects associated with their incorporation and their relationship to the degradation of other physical properties that has also been established. This project aims to shed light on these areas of uncertainty, by building on experience gained by study in the past of a large number of CVD films with certain well-defined characteristics. Extended defects will be studied by transmission electron microscopy, point defects will be studied by microscopic spectroscopy and the results will be correlated in seeking a good basic understanding of the charges introduced. In particular, we shall attempt to identify the ways in which the desired properties can be enhanced and deleterious properties minimised.
