Summary on Grant Application Form
Summary Describe the proposed research in about 200 words.Current trends in seeking quality in construction projects are advancing in focus from Quality Assurance under ISO 9000/BS 5750 to Total Quality Management. However, as Japanese industry demonstrates, provision of Quality requires continual improvements founded on culture and practices conducive to such changes. The research will examine progress towards the development of a 'Culture of Quality' in five construction firms. The use of QA and TQM will be investigated through formal questionnaires, interviews and participant observation. Research methods are intensive to facilitate a deep understanding of how beliefs, value structures and practices of members affect the extent t0 which a Culture of Quality is being developed. Case study projects will provide live, longitudinal data for objective assesments of the situation and elements of changes. Results will show consequences of quality-oriented changes, to whom such consequences accrue and highlight areas and mechanisms for potential improvement.
