Summary on Grant Application Form |
New mixed ligand zirconium phosphonates [Zr(O3PR)2-x(O3PR)x]n are to be synthesises where R = OH-carrying substituent and x=0.001 - 0.1, as 2-dimensional layer structures with a controlled concentration of surface functional groups and controlled morphology, to be converted into a new class of polyanionic supports for cationic catalysts [LnMX]+. Attachment of the cationic active centres to the support will be by electrostatic attraction a rather than covalent tethers. Surface anionic groups will primarily be weakly co-ordinating borates, [-OB(C6F5)3]-. Catalyst testing will be carried out with emphasis on polymerisation catalysts, with [LnMX]+=[Cp2ZrMe]+ and [(DAD)NiMe]+, and related complexes types. The potential extention of this heterogenisation approach to chiral catalysis is envisaged.
