Summary on Grant Application Form |
One of the principal questions of interest in forced expiration from the lungs is whether there is a causal relationship between wheezing (a kind of oscillation) and flow limitation ie the phenomenon that increasing a large expiratory driving pressure does not lead to an increase in flow rate on account of airway collapse. The proposed research will look into the self-excited oscillations found previously in the two dimensional study and answer the question if there is a causal link between the self-excited oscillations and flow limitation. This will be the first time that collapse and flutter will have been examined together, self-consistently, in the same model problem. In order to better interpret and understand the numerical results and the mechanisms, a direct comparison with a channel flow experimental results that has been designed for the purpose will be carried out.EngProg\
