Summary on Grant Application Form |
The project aims to develop an inspection technique chich can monitor the integrity of large, thick walled structures without the need to remove them from service. The main application area to be studied is pressure vessels and storage tanks in the oil and chemical industries, but the ideas developed will also be appliable to, for exampe, bridges and ships. The sensors will be cheap enough to be permenantly attached to the structure where this is desirable. The research required covers the investigation of different possible tranducer configurations, the prediction and measurment of the wavefields generated by different transducer designs and their interaction with defects, and the development of a testing methodology for different types of stucture. Of particular interest here will be the relable detection of defects in the presence of signals from other features. eg welds, edges etc. The last stage of the project will be site trials of the technique in plants by the industrial collaborators.
