Summary on Grant Application Form
Responsive lanthanide complexes will be made and their solution behaviour studied in detail with respect to modulation of their luminescence by reversinble and selective binding of H+, [HPO4] 2- and other chelating oxy-anions. Lifetime (tau), emission intensity and (for anion work) circularly polarised luminescence measurements will be used to monitor binding either at the inbuilt chromophore (e.g. protonation varies first excited singlet, and/or triplet energy levels) or at the metal centre (successive displacement of bound waters enhances the luminescence lifetime). In addition terbium complexes that respond to dissolve oxygen concentrations will be examined and analogous lipophilic derivatives prepared with a view to using flow-injection analytical methods in an optode.
