Summary on Grant Application Form
The research will build on a basic reflective architecture derived from our previous research. This architecture will be refined through out the project and will culminate in recommendations for a language independent meta-object protocol (MOP) for COBRA. The main implementation will consist of two phases.Firstly we will develop a rapid prototype of the reflective middle-ware architecture (incorporating the group service) using the reflective python language from our previous research. This will be used to validate and refine the architecture for the second phase work. The second phase will then develop a full implementation of reflective groups based on COBRA and the SRM multicast protocol. Access to group policy and management will be provided through a language independent MOP.The platform will be thoroughly evaluated in terms of its offered services (involving a multiparty implementation of the OMG proposals for Control and Management of Audio/Video Streams demonstrating QoS monitoring, adaptation and extension through reflection) and in terms of performance. The performance work will include overall performance comparisons with commercial ORBs. The evaluation work will be carried out in close co-operation with BT Labs.
