The aim of this project is to develop novel materials having interesting ferroelectric or ionic conductivity properties. The materials to be studied will be layered oxyhalides of the Sillen type and layered oxides of the Aurivillius type, both of which show interesting electrical properties and hold great promise for device applications. The project will encompass studies in synthetic solid state chemistry, crystallography and measurement of electrophysical properties. The key feature of the programme will be the detailed crystallographic characterisation of both existing and new phases, which has so far been lacking in understanding the properties of these materials. The derived structure-property-composition relationships will be fed back into the synthetic programme in order to design and characterise new materials for potential applications.
