Summary on Grant Application Form
The overall purpose of this project is to develop novel cermet coatings for applications which require, principally, improved abrasive wear properties at elevated temperatures. An integral part of this will be to synthesis, using SHS reactions, feedstock cermet powders tailored for deposition by innovative application of HVOF spraying. As well as conducting a wide ranging study with pre-reacted powders, a further novel development will be to employ mixes of pre- and unreacted powders. These will have sufficient stored energy to react in-flight during spraying, thus enabling a more extensive range of powder mixes to be considered. The coatings will be designed to meet commercial and engineering requirements in the aerospace industry. Powder producers will have opportunities for new business in the aerospace and chemical processing industry sectors.
