Summary on Grant Application Form |
The scope and limitations of the recently reported oxyanion-mediated polymerisation of heteroatom methacrylates will be evaluated with the aim of synthesising a wide range of novel hybrid hydrophilic copolymers. Monomers to be polymerised include various tertiary amine (meth) acrylates, tetrahydropyranyl methacrylate (as a protected monomer for methacrylic acid) and monomethoxy-capped poly (ethylene glycol) methacrylate. Target copolymer architectures are macromonomers, poly (ethylene glycol) -based diblock copolymers and either tri- or penta-block copolymers which contain a hydrophobic central block based on either carboxylic acid or tertiary amine residues. A fundamental study of the micellisation behaviour of these two new classes of polymeric surfactant is planned, both separately and as binary mixtures in aqueous solution. A three year PDRA is required to carry out the majority of this ambitious programme. In addition, and Ear-Marked PhD studentship is requested for the macromonomer syntheses and their subsequent evaluation as reactive steric stabilisers in novel latex syntheses.Applications for these new hydrophilic (co) polymers will be explored in collaboration and consultation with various industrial companies (see appended Letters of Support).
