This ambitious programme employs a new experimental system and coincidence detection techniques applied for the first time to investigate electron emission at surfaces under ion bombardment. The electron number statistics (electron groups) will be recorded both in coincidence and non-coincidence with reflected particles which are energy/charge analysed. A new gated sweep technique will measure the incident ion intensity enabling events that give zero electron emission probability, and of considerable current interest in the understanding of emission processes.Correlation of the electron emission with specific energy loss or charge change by the reflected projectile will be investigated using the coincidence method. This approach gives a deeper insight into the interaction processes. For example, projectiles elastically scattered can only contribute to electron emission by 'above surface' processes while changes in emission arising from differences in energy loss test current emission theories.Our coincidence technique can also investigate electron emission from a surface during the conversion of a positive ion to a reflected negative ion. The results will give important new information on the process. For example, a single step resonance process will not result in electron emission.
